Clane is a rapidly growing town, with a population of over 8000. The town most probably owes its origin to the foundation of Clane Friary in the sixth century. Clane is one of the settings in the early life of Stephen Daedalus, the protagonist in James Joyce‘s novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. James Joyce went to Clongowes Wood College, the all-boys boarding school, located in Clane. Joyce was a student in the Clane secondary School from 1888 to 1891 (ages 6-9).
